ah - a special post for a special place. jia jia is near and dear to my heart for all of the reasons that you mentioned above.

here's a little tidbit for your loyal readers - there was a 3rd branch of jia jia tang bao (not sure if it's still around) at 777 zhongshan lu near dong jia du lu. when i lived in shanghai 3 years ago, this was the branch of jia jia that stayed open the latest (around 7 - 7:30pm if memory serves)

quick note on xiao yang sheng jian - the wujiang lu branch was still around when i visited 3 months ago. as amazing as ever.

Dude, I subscribe to your RSS feed, I never miss any of your posts! There's so few people covering what you cover (in English) and you do it really well, too.

It's been at least a year since my last Shanghai visit, so probably the entire.city was torn down and rebuilt since then. I miss the food there so much - there was this great Halal Chinese place I used to go to near Fudan University, open 24 hours, fresh hand-pulled noodles with lamb and veg for 6 kuai. And of course the dumplings. I was lucky enough to have friends bring me to Jia Jia the first time. Yan's I found simply by walking down the street and seeing the long line and figuring it had to be something good, and wow, was it ever.

Thanks for the link!

Hey Spike, thanks for visiting again! I haven't been back to Shanghai since late last year ... but I thought they've already redeveloped Wujiang Lu (unless they're doing it again) ... I would hate to see the 2 Xiao Yang's on Wujiang close because of the redevelopment even though there are another 2-3 branches around that district (near a side street off Xinzha Road, Huanghe Road, etc.) ... Anyway, nice blog you have there ... I will be visiting more. Also "rectified" my mistake by adding you onto my blogroll :) Cheers

I'm the world's biggest fan of Din Tai Fung but I will agree with you that the xiao long bao at Jia Jia are even better.

The Wujiang Lu branch of Yang's will be closing soon (or has it already closed?). Wujiang Lu, sadly, is due for redevelopment.
